The Sponsored Parent visa (subclass 870) offers a new pathway for parents to reunite with their children in Australia. It is a temporary visa that allows a parent of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to visit Australia and stay for up to 3 to 5 years, with the option to reapply for further visas up to a maximum of 10 years.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

You must be outside Australia when you apply for this visa

You must have an eligible child who is settled in Australia as an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen

You must be sponsored by eligible child, eligible relative or community organisation

You must lodge your visa application within 6 months of sponsorship approval

You must meet the health and character requirements​

You must maintain adequate arrangements for health insurance while in Australia
WHAT THIS VISA ALLOWS YOU TO DO

Live in Australia for up to 3 or 5 years per visa

Travel to and from Australia during the validity of the travel facility of the visa

Apply for further visas to visit up to a maximum period in Australia of 10 years
IMPORTANT INFORMATION*
Subclass 870 visa holders should be aware that:

They must comply with all conditions imposed on the visa applicant when the visa was granted

They must obey Australian law

They must maintain adequate health insurance for the whole duration of their stay in Australia when not eligible for Medicare. You may find information about Medicare eligibility at Services Australia website.

The Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa does not lead to permanent residence in Australia and a subclass 870 visa holder cannot apply for a permanent parent visa while holding the Sponsored Parent visa.

FEES AND CHARGES

Government Visa Application Charges
First instalment base visa application charge for Sponsored Parent Visa (subclass 870) is of AUD1,180.00​.​
Second instalment for subclass 870 is of:
-AUD4,715.00 for a visa valid for up to 3 years OR​
-AUD10,605.00 for a visa valid for up to 5 years.

PROCESSING TIMES

The Department of Home Affairs generally processes most Parent Sponsorship applications for subclass 870 applicants within 4 months, and the Sponsored Parent Visa Application processing time is of between 5 and 7 months.
